1. News Story

News style (also journalistic style or news writing style) is the prose style used for news reporting in media such as newspapers, radio and television. News style encompasses not only vocabulary and sentence structure, but also the way in which stories present the information in terms of relative importance, tone, and intended audience.

News writing attempts to answer all the basic questions about any particular event - who, what, when, where and why (the Five Ws) and also often how - at the opening of the article. This form of structure is sometimes called the "inverted pyramid", to refer to the decreasing importance of information in subsequent paragraphs :

Headline : Your headline for the news story must be attractive and eye-catching.

Place : The name of the place, where the story occurred or is filed from, must be

written.

Date : You must mention the date of your story.

Source : The source must be clearly written i.e. who gave you or where did you get the story from?

Body : The first sentence of the body generally describes the headline. Other

sentences must give the background and detail for the headline. The language

must be simple and grammatically correct.

1. Deadly Bus Accident in Nepal Claims 30 Lives

Devraj Subedi

July 25, 2024

In a tragic accident, a passenger bus veered off a mountainous road in Nepal’s Sindhupalchok district early this morning, resulting in the deaths of 30 people and injuring dozens more.

The bus, carrying over 50 passengers, was traveling from Kathmandu to the remote village of Bahrabise when it skidded off the narrow road and plunged into a ravine. Rescue operations have been underway since dawn, with emergency services and local volunteers working tirelessly to retrieve bodies and provide medical assistance to the injured.

"This is a heartbreaking incident. Our prayers and thoughts are with the families of the victims," said Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli in a press statement. He also assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the accident.

Witnesses reported that the bus appeared to be speeding and struggling to navigate the sharp turns on the mountainous route. Initial reports suggest that the driver may have lost control of the vehicle due to a brake failure.

The challenging terrain and poor road conditions in many parts of Nepal often contribute to such accidents, making travel in these regions particularly hazardous. This latest tragedy has sparked renewed calls for improvements in road safety and infrastructure across the country.

The Sindhupalchok district police have confirmed that the injured passengers have been transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, and the identities of the deceased are being verified. Meanwhile, grieving families and community members have gathered at the crash site, mourning their loss.

As Nepal mourns the loss of these lives, the government has declared a day of national mourning. The Ministry of Transport has also announced that it will be inspecting buses and other public transportation vehicles for safety compliance.

Of the injured, three are critically injured. Four others have returned home after treatment at the Bharatpur-based hospital.

3. Two buses with dozens of passengers missing in Trishuli river

CHITWAN, July 12: Two buses carrying passengers went missing in the Trishuli River early this morning due to landslides in the Simaltal area along the Narayanghat-Mugling road section in Chitwan district, officials confirmed. The buses were carrying around 65 passengers, it is reported.

Chief District Officer of Chitwan, Indra Dev Yadav, confirmed that the two vehicles fell into the river at 3:30 this morning.

According to Yadav, a bus of Ganapati Deluxe heading to Gaur in Rautahat from Kathmandu was reportedly carrying 41 people, and the other bus named Angel Deluxe en route to Kathmandu from Birgunj had 24 people on board.

Chief District Officer Yadav, who is currently at the incident site, said that rescue workers have started working to clear the landslide debris.

Yadav said further details of the accident are still awaited.

Expressing grief over the disappearance of the buses in the Trishuli River, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has issued directives for immediate search and rescue operations.

When the two buses were swept away by the landslide in the Simaltal area of the Narayanghat-Mugling road section, nearly five dozen passengers went missing. He directed the relevant agencies to carry out immediate and effective search and rescue operations.

The prime minister also expressed grief over the loss of life and property due to floods and landslides in different parts of the country. He urged citizens to take necessary precautions. Prime Minister Dahal has also appealed to the federal, provincial, and local governments for the necessary cooperation and coordination in disaster management and risk reduction with high vigilance as the adverse weather conditions persist in the country.

4. Nepal landslides sweep two buses into river; 65 passengers missing

KATHMANDU:

Landslides in Nepal swept two buses with at least 65 passengers on board into a river on Friday, while landslides elsewhere in the mountainous country killed at least 10 people, police said.

Dozens have died in the Himalayan nation since the middle of June as torrential monsoon rains triggered landslides and flooding.

On Friday, authorities mobilised the military and police to search for the 65 missing passengers swept into the Trishuli River in the early hours.

The incident happened in Chitwan district, about 86 kilometres (53 miles) west of Kathmandu, police spokesman Dan Bahadur Karki said.

"There were 41 people in the bus travelling from Kathmandu to Gaur, and 24 people in the bus travelling from Birgunj to Kathmandu. Both the buses and the passengers are missing in Trishuli River," he said.

In Kaski district, 150 kilometres (93 miles) west of the capital, 10 people were killed when landslides washed away three houses, Karki added.

Landslides and floods have killed at least 91 people in Nepal since mid-June.

In a social media post on Friday, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal expressed sadness over the disasters and instructed government agencies to conduct effective search and rescue operations.

5. Plane crash at Nepal's Kathmandu airport kills 18; captain survives

By Reuters

KATHMANDU, July 24 (Reuters) - A small passenger plane belonging to Nepal's Saurya Airlines crashed and caught fire while taking off from the capital Kathmandu on Wednesday, killing 18 people on board and leaving one survivor, the captain, officials said.

"Only the captain was rescued alive and is receiving treatment at a hospital," said Tej Bahadur Poudyal, spokesman for Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport.

The 50-seater plane, carrying two crew members and 17 technicians, was heading for regular maintenance to Nepal's new Pokhara airport, which is equipped with aircraft maintenance hangars, the officials said.

Eighteen of those on board the CRJ-200 aircraft were Nepali citizens, with one engineer from Yemen, Saurya said.

"Shortly after takeoff ... the aircraft veered off to the right and crashed on the east side of the runway," the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal said in a statement.

The crash again focused attention on the poor air safety record of the impoverished, landlocked Himalayan nation that is wedged between India and China and is heavily dependent upon air connectivity due to its limited road network.

Nearly 360 people have died in plane or helicopter crashes in the country since 2000.

Nepal's prime minister, K.P. Sharma Oli, visited the crash site and asked people to "be patient" in a social media post, without elaborating.

An emergency cabinet meeting was called to form a panel to investigate the incident, a government spokesman said.

6.  Plane crash at Nepal’s Kathmandu airport kills 18; pilot only survivor

A passenger plane has crashed and caught fire shortly after taking off from Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, killing 18 people, aviation officials say.

The pilot was the only survivor of Wednesday’s crash and was being treated in hospital, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal said in a statement.

The incident took place right after the 11:11am (05:26 GMT) takeoff of the 50-seat Bombardier CRJ200, the aviation authority said. The plane then turned right and crashed into the eastern section of the airport, the statement said. It was on its way to the resort town of of Pokhara. The cause of the crash is being investigated.

A doctor at Kathmandu Medical College Hospital told The Associated Press news agency that the pilot had suffered injuries to the eyes “but is not in any danger”.

Eighteen Nepalis, including one child, and a Yemeni national were on the plane, the aviation authority confirmed.

The bodies were taken to the TU Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu for autopsy.
